Section Enlargement (Concrete Jacketing)

Enlargement of the existing structural members such as columns/beams sections by placing steel reinforcement around its periphery and then concreting it is a widely adopted option; which is referred to as concrete jacketing.

This method significantly increases the member sizes and thereby its stiffness. Concrete jacketing primarily enhances the confinement along- with the shear and axial behavior in the case of columns; whereas in deficient RCC beams, it improves shear and flexural behavior too.\

External Steel Plate Bonding

Jacketing of RCC Columns & Beams using steel sheets, angles, and the channel is another conventional technique of retrofitting known as Steel Jacketing.

Though this method does not much increase the column or beam sizes relative to concrete jacketing, nevertheless, an increase in stiffness could be significant.

CFRP Strengthening (Carbon Fiber Strips Bonding)

In the Jacketing of structural elements, modern techniques are also available, that use fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets for enhancing the strength of deficient members.

Fiber Reinforced Polymer-based composite materials as CFRP has shown great promise in the rehabilitation of the reinforced concrete structures. Retrofitting of structures can be done with much ease using these high strength sheets. Composite materials are an excellent option to be used as external reinforcement because of their high tensile strength, lightweight, resistance to corrosion, high durability, and ease of installation.
